John Button

JOHN BUTTON

John Button grew up on the east coast of England and his home county of Suffolk still provides a great source of inspiration.  Studying architecture in Brighton gave him a broad sense of design and the opportunity to hone his drawing skills.  Since he relocated to Sweden with his family, John has been pursuing a desire to express himself visually, less bound by the restrictions of design and architecture.

In John’s paintings he explores landscape and seascape through patterns and texture, attempting to trigger a memory or a sense of place and ignoring conventional rules of perspective.  In his still-life studies, he teases something extraordinary out of everyday surroundings.  John says “inspiration for me lies all around, from an uncleared breakfast table to an upturned boat on a shingle beach, or the childhood memory of a family walk”.

John paints in acrylics which he lays on with vigour.  After creating an initial abstract composition of shapes and splashes, some semblance of reality usually finds its way in; a mug, a vase, a boat, a jetty…. In addition to paint, John uses charcoal, crayon, correcting fluid, or whatever is to hand, scratching in to the surface and distressing it, then working up the layers until something emerges that tells him to stop.
